Static, paper-based procedures required a technician to read every step, including branches that did not apply to the situation in front of them, and to track sign-offs by hand.
That made it easy to work a step out of order or lose track of where a job stood mid-shift. When a deviation occurred, the resolution and the sign-off often sat in a separate note rather than against the step that triggered it, which complicated the record when the job was reviewed later.
